Recorded using the Buchla 200 at the First Church of Synthesis, Spring 2017.

NQA's original press release for the Synth Tidings series:

NQA was founded as the micro-label arm of the First Church of Synthesis, an electronic music studio and residence located 15 miles from the heart of Brooklyn in a peaceful, serene suburb on the Nassau County border.

From the start, I wanted to approach the house as a large living project studio - from the current live-room in the 70's style wood-panel basement complete with bar and billiards (which I'm hoping will start hosting performances by the fall), to the 16-channel main room, equipped with all things antiquated: a modest selection of vintage synths and aging outboard gear, as well as capabilities for 8-track authoring, wire recording, reel-to-reel mixdown, vhs-digitization and, of course, a cassette duplication facility.

The end goal is to open this little nook of synthesizers and studio tools to visiting artists and eventually composer residencies while providing reprieve from the overwhelming overture of the city. And while an official announcement is still a ways away due to ongoing projects taking up most of my weekends while maintaining a full-time job and funding everything out of pocket while balancing a mortgage, I suppose it's time to finally spill the beans on something I've been whispering about for some time.

One of the most significant acquisitions of the past 5 years has been a sizeable Buchla 200 system. I've been slowly inviting a handful of artists to come in and spend some time with this beast and provide me with some of the fruits of their labor to release in return. The first artist to take me up on the offer was Jason Soliday. A native of Chicago, Jason has been watching me shape the direction of the house over the last 3 years whenever he's been in town, and was one of the first to really champion the project's potential. His experiments from last year yielded our first release in the 'SYNTH TIDINGS' series - a c20 of Jason bending the 200 to his signature style of absolute WTF electronic wizardry. A few others artists have been confirmed, but best not to put the cart ahead of any horses. Each tape in the series will be an edition of 30, pro-dubbed and packaged with NQA's signature vellum, silhouetting one of the synth's many modules, in Jason’s case, the 292c.

Keep watching the skies.
