Recorded for Disquiet Junto 0028 - Netlabel
Not so much a remix as an appropriation.. or perhaps even détournement would be a better description, given that the source has nowhere near as bleak a feel as my (mis)use of it. Mid-summer rot, days of insomnia, power outages and burning transformers.. nothing but the chirping of insects to keep company...
Three passes through a setup consisting of a small Eurorack modular, Eventide Pitchfactor, and the Rabbithole Vortex (a circuit-bent pitchshifting delay looper device built for me by Daniel Park (Spunky Toofers)). Two takes using the track "Tanku" by Xesús Valle as their source, and the third take is a portable shortwave radio fed through the same rig. The Eurorack is responsible for most of the heavy lifting here with a MakeNoise Phonogene doing most of the real-time sampling and looping. Not much pre-planning here except for the setting up of the initial patch. My process generally consists of improvising direct to the recorder, and then combing through the results for the interesting parts.. something like a kind of audio haruspicy. The interesting bits were layered in Reaper without any additional effects except some volume and pan automation, and a bit of compression and limiting.
